I recently joined the Bridlepath volunteer program, as I desired to be part of something larger than my day to day responsibilities. I quickly realized supporting participants is quite humbling. Also, very rewarding assisting with the horses. My experience has given back even more than I contribute! I'm grateful to be a part of this awesome team.

Volunteering at Bridlepath is such a rich experience on so many levels. Working with the horses is amazing, and watching the participants become more and more at ease around and on the horse is so rewarding. I love that even the smallest accomplishment by a rider is cause for celebration. . . because it is!!! I have been involved in many nonprofits where volunteers are needed, so I speak from experience when I say that the appreciation shown to and for volunteers is exceptional. The extras provided, like the volunteer appreciation holiday party, the ongoing opportunities for continuing education (not to mention the volunteer room with snacks etc.) is so thoughtful and intentional. It makes me feel valued and appreciated!

McKenna has been having a blast learning to ride with Natalie and Ms. Nancy! They have both been amazing at developing a personal rapport with her. What a joy it has been to watch her grow in her confidence and abilities! I've noticed a difference in not only her physical strength but also her perseverance and frustration tolerance. Riding has also helped her get through some anxiety episodes...it's easier to get through some tough days when looking forward to a ride with Tank!

I’ve always admired horses from a distance, as I haven't had many opportunities to be around them. My late mother passed on her love of horses to me when I was young, so when I read the article about Bridlepath Equine Center in our local paper, it struck a chord with me. In college, I studied Music Therapy but later switched to Nursing (now retired). Learning about the opening of a nearby equine center was very exciting for me as I wanted to help in some capacity. I mentioned the idea of volunteering there to my husband, and he was also enthusiastic about it. Watching Danielle interact with the clients we assist is truly delightful. Her instructions and her conversations with the clients during their sessions are very educational, and it's clear to see how they help foster feelings of accomplishment and independence in the clients. We are also extremely impressed with the center and how it is run. From the emails to the volunteers, the instructions while at the center, the interactions with the team members and clients, the whole place is run so efficiently. Our only regret is not being able to volunteer there more!

What I like about Bridlepath is that it’s a safe place where a child with life challenges is accepted, and where what they can do is celebrated. As a leader of the horse, during the lessons, I enjoy seeing how each lesson is both tailored to the child’s growth goals, but also becomes flexible to the immediate needs of the day. To aim for the positive and to find joy in each lesson is the goal of each day at Bridlepath.

Horseback riding has aided Lyndsi to progress and develop her own identity and purpose. Lyndsi’s been riding 12 years and while she continues to perfect the art of being an equestrian, horseback riding has provided her physical and emotional benefits along with new friends. She also loves spending time with and learning from her instructor Danielle. She loves riding each week and seeing herself progress on the horse from walking to trotting to a canter. When I talk to Lyndsi on a day she is going horseback riding, the tone of her voice is so excited and so confident. I’ve also noticed that she is more patient, focused, and curious. All of which have had a direct impact on her reading, writing and social skills. Physically, the right side of her body was more affected from her accident, but she continues to gain strength in her right hand as she has to use both of her hands to hold the horse’s reins. All of these strides can be attributed to the instructors, the horses (who love their riders, no matter who they are), the volunteers and administrative staff at Bridlepath and the work they do to support therapeutic riding.

Since Izabelle started at Bridlepath, I have seen such a difference in her self-esteem. She is more willing to do things on her own, “things” that she thought would be too hard, but pushed her way through with Danielle’s help and accomplished the task, which makes her feel proud of herself, and willing to try new things. What the program has helped Izabelle with: Trying new “things", helped/helps self-esteem, doing “things” on her own, improving her endurance and physical strength, especially her core and legs, helping her balance, her speech, her ability to make decisions on her own, and critical thinking skills.
